Newcastle Showgirl Competition
2018 Newcastle Showgirl Competition entries will open in August.
The Newcastle Showgirl Competition is the first stage of The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition – the premier leadership program for young women in NSW. The Showgirl Competition identifies ambassadors for rural NSW and the Agricultural Show movement.
A Newcastle Showgirl is an ambassador for both the Newcastle Regional Show and the Newcastle Community. Her role involves formal and informal duties at the Newcastle Regional Show and associated events.
Judging criteria is based on personality, confidence, ambitions/goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, personal presentation and volunteer/community participation. Entrants must also demonstrate knowledge of their local community and current affairs.
Success at the Local competition sees the Showgirl proceed to their Zone Final. At the Zone Finals, the Showgirls meet other passionate young women, gaining great insights and personal development from the experience. From the Zone Finals, judges select from one to three representatives for the State Final, held in conjunction with the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The Newcastle Showgirl Competition has two sections. The Showgirl Section is open to young women aged from 18 years to less than 25 years as at 1 May in the year of the State Final (i.e. the year following being awarded the Newcastle Showgirl sash). The Teen Showgirl Section is open to girls aged from 16 years to less than 18 years as at 1 May in the year following the winning of the sash. (Note – the age is standardised to complement the older section.)
Each competition is conducted separately and at different times of the year. The Teen Showgirl Competition is held in conjunction with the Newcastle Regional Show on the first weekend in March. The Newcastle Showgirl Competition is held in September/October each year.
Both Showgirls reign for one year, until the next competition for their section. Both Showgirls are required to be actively involved in the Newcastle Regional Show, support the Showgirl Competitions and the Newcastle Community. Above all, they must abide by the Showgirls’ Code of Conduct as set out by the RAS and the ASC when acting as ambassadors for the RAS, ASC and their Local Show Society.
