The 2010 Hunter Campdraft Cup
Saturday 27th March 2010
Regional Show Campdraft champions from Bulahdelah, Cessnock, Dungog, Gloucester, Gresford, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Stroud will compete for the 2010 Hunter Campdraft Cup on Saturday March 27th 2010.
Founded in Australia in the late 19th century to demonstrate horse skills, campdrafting is a visually spectacular sport of skill and agility by both horse and rider in blocking the attempts of cattle to follow their natural instinct to return to the mob.
The rider on horseback must "cut out" one from the mob of cattle in the yard or "camp" and block and turn that beast at least two or three times to prove to the judge that they have the beast under control; they then push it out of the camp and through a course around pegs involving right and left hand turns in a figure eight, before guiding it through two pegs known as "the gate". Rider and horse have forty seconds to complete the course, after this time, they are “cracked off” by the judge’s stockwhip.
The rules of the competition are those of the National Campdraft Council of Australia -

Up to a total of 100 points will be scored by horse and rider; a "Cut out" is worth a total of 26 points; horse work up to a further 70 points; and 4 points for the course. The rider with the highest points wins.
The Cup will encompass 2 rounds (of 1 hour duration), 1:00pm and 4:00pm (Saturday March 27th) comprising of 10 x 40 second campdrafts.
