2019 Hunter Campdraft Cup

The Baileys of Greta Hunter Campdraft Cup

“INVITATIONAL” NEWCASTLE SHOWGROUND

Campdraft riders, male and female, will battle it out to take home the 2019 Bailey’s of Greta Hunter Campdraft Cup which is to be held at The Show – Newcastle & Hunter, on Saturday 2 March, with the first round at 2.45 PM

The Hunter Campdraft Cup is a “Pinnacle” Event, in which the entrants strive to qualify. The entrants must have won or been a runner up in an Open Campdraft Competition at the following Agricultural Shows; – Gloucester, Stroud, Bulahdelah, Dungog, Gresford, Muswellbrook, Morisset, Singleton, Cessnock.  The previous year’s Hunter Campdraft Cup winner is also invited to attend.

This uniquely Australian pastime is thought to have developed in Outback Qld with the first official competition (to rules) held at the Tenterfield Show NSW 1884. It is believed the sport developed among stockmen and drovers in informal competitions to prove their horse skills. The Stockhorse is the most popular breed of horse for campdrafting because of its agility, speed and strength, all of which are required to block the attempts of cattle to follow their natural instinct to return to the mob.

The Competition

The sport requires consummate skill and horsemanship in selecting a beast from the mob of cattle in the yard or “camp” and block and turn that beast at least two or three times to prove to the judge that they have the beast under control. This is known as “The Cut-out”. They then push it out of the camp through a course around pegs involving right & left hand turns in a figure eight, before guiding it through two pegs known as “the gate”.  Rider and horse have 40 seconds to complete the course, after this time, they are “cracked off” by the judge’s stockwhip.

Scoring

The competition will consist of two rounds, each of between approx. 40 minutes duration.  Points from the two rounds are added together for a final score. The highest score of the day will be the winner. Points will be awarded for horse work – up to 70 points, ‘Cut-out’ worth a max of 26 points and an extra 4 points can be awarded for first & second peg and gate work.

Great Prestige is bestowed on the winning horse and rider of the “Cup”.
